Trying to work out how much you’re worth charging for web development work? I this question come up on a forum - here’s my comments on the subject:
How many pages? If it’s 3-5 pages, no worries there’s no point charging this. If they want 30-40 pages and expect you to do it all - charge them! Now days CMS’s are more common, so the client will do the pages themselves, you just do the templates.
Flash? Database? Security? All very important and vary on what type/standard they want… if they want a simple 100×20 flash banner - its priced differently to flash intro. MySQL Database - even though it’s free charge for the time it takes to setup! Security - if you have login scripts or encryption… all the same, charge for it.
Resources? Meetings, travel, phone calls, paper… Coding language? Php? .Net?
What I do is that I add up all these things - put dollar values on all of them, get a quote. Then I discount it a little… simply because Jimmy’s Fish & Chips won’t be paying $3,000 for a simple 10 page website where they can manage it themselves. I always draw up alternatives (have 3 concepts) and let them choose. Most cases you’ll need to do a heap of planning & research before you even hit the code to work out their requirements, and make sure you don’t overkill the project.
